Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a Nurse Practitioner?Nurse Practitioners are health care professionals with an advanced degree that allows us the ability to not just assess a patient, but to order diagnostic tests, to be able to confirm a diagnosis, prescribe medications, and coordinate a treatment plan for that patient.
-
What’s the timeline for opening the proposed clinic?GNPC will officially open for services November 4th, 2024. Individuals that register prior to November 4th, 2024 will have their annual renewal date due on November 4th in subsequent years.
-
Are services at GNPC covered by OHIP?No. The Ontario Ministry of Health does not permit Nurse Practitioners to bill OHIP. Allied services, such as bloodwork, screening tests, specimen samples, diagnostic tests, and referrals to specialists are covered by OHIP. It is specifically the assessment, and care performed by the NP that is not covered. At this time, and until public funding becomes available to NPs, GNPC must continue membership fees in order to ensure our employees are paid for their professional services.
-
Once I become a member, can I book an appointment prior to my full physical?Yes.
-
If I register with GNPC, will I be removed from the Family Doctor wait list on Ontario Health Connect? No. Members may continue with services at GNPC while remaining on the wait list for a publicly funded general practitioner.
-
I am unhappy with my general practitioner; can I register as a member for GNPC?There are over 40,000 people in Kingston that do not have a general practitioner. While GNPC does not screen registrants for an existing general practitioner, we strongly discourage anyone with a GP from registering.
-
Are services at GNPC covered by private insurance? Each Insurance Company is independently responsible for determining if NP services will be covered. GNPC encourages all Members to talk to their Insurance Company to determine coverage.
-
Are there other similar clinics in Ontario? There are currently 25 Nurse Practitioner-run clinics in Ontario that are publicly funded. There are an increasing number of private NP clinics emerging in Ontario as NPs tire of waiting for the Provincial Government to support OHIP billing for NPs.
-
What will be your hours of operation? The growth of this project will be advanced in 3 phases. It is anticipated that during the first phase hours will be Mon to Thurs 8:30 to 4:30pm Members may have access to virtual care services after hours at an additional cost.
-
When will I be able to register my children?Children and persons with disabilities, and persons otherwise designated as dependents will start to be incorporated into membership care in Phase 2. By Phase 3, care for dependents will be fully incorporated into membership care. During Phase 1, GNPC may be able to support some medical care for dependents. The decision to provide care is at the discretion of the provider. During Phase 1, if care is provided for a dependent, the Member can expect to be charged a drop-in rate of $55.00 per 15 minutes. Additional costs may be associated with a dependent’s care and would be determined by the GNPC care team. The cost to register a dependent to a Membership client will be disclosed to the public with the launch of Phase 2.
